VA - Bouffants, Beehives & Backcombing ~ Early Brit Girls Vol.1 (2013)

The post-Shapiro Brit girl scene has been left relatively untapped since the Sequel label's Here Comes The Girls compilations in the 90s, but now their compilers deliver a budget set of 68 tracks to delight and bewilder. Be prepared for an overdose of pizzicato strings and "sha-la-la" backup interjections as the many voices of the period deliver their hopeful chart attempts.
Unsurprisingly, better-known artists such as Helen Shapiro, Susan Maughan and Petula Clark emerge relatively unscathed, as they got first dibs on the best material, while there are some pleasant surprises from the likes of Lorne Lesley (the slinky, jazzy I Don't Know) and Jackie Frisco (the cute Sugar Baby). Honourable mentions should also go to Glenda Collins, Grazina and Louise Cordet, who all managed to sound professional and effective.
Elsewhere, however, there are some distinctly dodgy moments, such as The Breakaways' unlistenable cover of He's A Rebel, while minds will boggle at Marion Ryan's Jo-Jo The Dogfaced Boy. Thankfully, equilibrium is restored with The Vernons Girls' splendid Lover Please. Additionally, the simple but attractive card sleeve is a delight, though small-print readers might miss the songwriter credits.
