VA - 100 Hits - Northern Soul (2009)

One of the more useful and focused sets in the Demon label's 100 Hits series, 100 Hits: Northern Soul functions as cheap, exhaustive way to get one's feet wet with quality late-'60s R&B that (for the most part) went overlooked by the mainstream. All the selections are the original studio recordings, even though the packaging and price might give one the impression that he or she is about to be had. There's plenty to enjoy here, along with many essentials, including Barbara Acklin's "Am I the Same Girl," Freda Payne's "Band of Gold," Willie Mitchell's "That Driving Beat," Willie Hutch's "Lucky to Be Loved by You," and Tyrone Davis' "Turn Back the Hands of Time." Even if you enjoy only ten of these songs, you've paid the price of one midline CD.
